This project represents a bold departure from traditional tourism marketing, such as campaigns like Pure Michigan, which typically showcase scenic vistas and attractions set to emotional music and voiceovers. While these conventional approaches have proven effective for decades, Experience Grand Rapids recognized the need to evolve tourism marketing to connect with new generations of travelers who seek authentic, unexpected experiences that transcend typical tourist imagery.
Rather than simply highlighting attractions, our approach created a multi-dimensional, almost magical portrayal of Grand Rapids that spoke to the experiential nature of modern travel. By blending reality with animation, we developed a next-generation tourism advertisement that appeals to younger, experience-driven travelers while maintaining the production quality expected from top-tier destination marketing.
The "No Ordinary Town" concept challenges tourism marketing conventions by emphasizing the emotional journey and moments of discovery rather than simply showcasing landmarks. This represents a significant shift from traditional tourism advertising that relies heavily on beauty shots and descriptive narration.
The project's engagement metrics validate our approach and indicate a strong return on investment for the client. More importantly, the campaign aligned perfectly with Experience Grand Rapids' new vision statement to be "the must-experience destination in the Midwest," helping to translate this aspiration into a tangible, visual promise that resonates with the next generation of travelers.
Through this work, we demonstrated how production expertise combined with creative storytelling can transform destination marketing from a simple showcase of attractions into a compelling invitation to experience something truly extraordinary.

"No Ordinary Town" — We developed a concept that positioned Grand Rapids as a magical destination where the expected transforms into the extraordinary. The approach married live-action footage with whimsical animation under the "Dream Grand and Go" campaign umbrella, creating a dreamlike quality that invited viewers to see Grand Rapids as a place where imagination comes alive.

Most Interesting/Challenging Aspect
The most challenging aspect was creating a cohesive narrative that showcased all six of Experience Grand Rapids' marketing pillars in just 30 seconds while maintaining a magical, immersive feel.
We accomplished this through meticulous storyboarding and innovative transitions that transported viewers from one experience to the next. Our solution was to incorporate animated elements as characters in their own right – fish swimming up crosswalks, butterflies leading to Frederik Meijer Gardens, music notes dancing during a concert scene – all tying back to the brand while creating visual delight.
